SUN PROTECTION IN SOUTH AFRICA
Why is daily SPF important in South Africa?
South Africa has one of the highest UV indexes in the world.
UVA rays (which cause ageing and pigmentation) are present all year round—even on cloudy days.
UVB rays (which cause burning) are stronger in summer, but still present in winter.
Daily sunscreen helps prevent:
• Premature ageing and wrinkles
• Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
• Sun damage
• Skin cancer risk
Wearing SPF every day is essential in South Africa, not just during holidays.
What does SPF mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures protection against UVB rays (burning rays).
For example:
• SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays
• SPF 50+ blocks approximately 98–99% of UVB rays
However, correct application and reapplication are essential to achieve this protection.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB?
UVA = Ageing
UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and cause wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity.
UVB = Burning
UVB rays cause sunburn and direct DNA damage.
DARLING sunscreens provide broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection in line with European standards.
How much sunscreen should I apply?
For proper protection:
• Face & neck: Approximately two finger lengths (about ½ teaspoon).
• Full body: Approximately one shot glass (30 ml).
Apply 15–20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Are DARLING sunscreens water resistant?
Yes. All DARLING sunscreens are water resistant. However, they are not waterproof, and reapplication is essential after swimming or sweating.
Do DARLING sunscreens leave a white cast?
No. DARLING formulas are designed to blend seamlessly into all skin tones without leaving a white residue.
Are DARLING sunscreens safe for sensitive skin?
DARLING products are dermatologically tested and suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
For fragrance-sensitive individuals, select fragrance-free formulas where available.
If you have specific skin concerns or medical conditions, consult your healthcare provider.
